Yalobusha County
Location
“Yalobusha” is a native American word meaning “tadpole place.” While its name is unique, the substandard housing in this rural county is sadly commonplace. Yalobusha County joined The Fuller Center for Housing in 2008 after 15 years as a Habitat for Humanity affiliate. Located in northwest Mississippi, 75 miles south of Memphis, Tenn., Yalobuhsa County, population 13,401, serves persons in the dual county seats of Water Valley, population, 3,677, and Coffeeville, population 930.
In September, a covered front porch and a back porch landing were added to the mobile home purchased by local citizens for an Assembly of God minister and his wife. Despite being only 54 years old, Rev. Charles Homan was forced to retire from his church due to stage four cancer.
Our second planned project is a Greater Blessing renovation for a 68-year-old single woman who devoted her life to caring for her recently-deceased parents. We will replace the roof and some of the flooring, and paint the interior and exterior walls.
