What did I do last summer? I biked over 1400 miles and repaired eight homes for families living in poverty and had the TIME OF MY LIFE. Waking up each day and spending time 'in the saddle' with the sun shining on my face was such a wonderful treat, but even that couldn't compare with the amazing experiences our group had as we put our skills to use to help out a neighbor. This trip wasn't just biking to get to our next location to swing hammers and paint brushes-- it was an opportunity to change LIVES and have an IMPACT on someone who was in need of a "hand up." We formed countless memories and made numerous new friends while being blessed with the chance to grow in Christ and be a part of the "Movement to End Poverty Housing."

The whole experience is excellent. Even if you think you don't have it in you, an adventure like this can cause you to dig deep and find the strength to complete it. The range of cycling expertise ran from almost totally inexperienced to first class competitive cyclists. This doesn't have to be an event that is reserved only for the very young, but I will confess that even though I had been regularly riding 30+ miles at least twice a week, a little more long distance training might have helped me on century day. The friendships made, not only with the other cyclists, but also with the many people we met along the way, these were truly awesome!

The FCBA was an outstanding experience, both as a rider and as an observer. While I only rode one section, it was a thrill to be part of something so incredible – 1400 miles of bicycling and building to help people improve their homes. I was amazed by the dedication of those who rode it all and delighted by how pleasant and upbeat they were under demanding conditions. I loved meeting them, riding with them (sort of), and following the progress through the blog updates.
I was also touched by the generosity of those who donated so freely for people they didn’t know, and I was very impressed by how well the myriad details of the event were organized. This was an enormous undertaking of eternal significance and the Fuller Center folks, with the help of hundreds of others along the route, made it look easy. I look forward to participating in a bigger way next year. I can only imagine what an unforgettable ride this must have been for those who did it all!

For two months last summer, I rode my bicycle 3,300 miles through the deserts of California, over Colorado’s Rockies, past the flat farmland and cow pens of Kansas and through the buggy swamps of the deep south. I raised $5,000 to help The Fuller Center for Housing build simple, decent houses around the U.S. for impoverished families. I worked on six different Fuller Center homes. I met people who define human strength and perseverance in the face of adversity. I made friends, connected with the land, saw the country and grew as a person. I recommend this trip in all earnestness, because it was one of the most incredible experiences of my life.
Note: After the ride, Katherine joined The Fuller Center as a member of the staff.
