Who we are:
Located in the community that gave birth to Habitat for Humanity and The Fuller Center for Housing, Americus-Sumter FCH focuses on repairing and renovating existing homes for low-income families.
The inaugural project for The Fuller Center of Americus-Sumter County was a Greater Blessing Box renovation to a home that had been damaged by the 2007 tornado. The home was for an elderly mother and her two daughters. A new roof along with various interior and exterior repairs were done to the home.

The Americus-Sumter Fuller Center for Housing is partnering with Americus First Presbyterian Church to build a new home which is a duplex for homeowners Thaddeus Harris and Chuck Davis. The home is wheelchair accessible, highly energy efficient and close to Davis’ family just a few blocks away, who will offer occasional caregiving when needed.
The current project was featured in the national magazine "Presbyterians Today" -- check out the article here.
A dedication was held for the home on April 22 to emphasize its earth-friendly design. Read about the dedication ceremony here. But the home isn't quite ready for Chuck and Thad to move in yet.
You can help by donating an item still needed for building. Items are listed in the "Help Us Welcome Them Home Registry" -- view it here!
The project began (thanks in part to the funding raised by the fall's Fish Fry--read more here) when the first of many volunteer teams got out on Martin Luther King Day of Service to build the walls. See how the homeowners joined the fun here.
Local Americus-Sumter Fuller Center board chair, Kirk Lyman-Barner reported, “Millard really wanted this house to get started so he agreed to offer a $20,000 matching challenge grant from the Mattie H. Marshall Foundation to encourage the Presbyterian congregation to raise the remaining funds. Each dollar raised will be doubled.”
Rev. Allan Purtil, pastor of Americus First Presbyterian, said, "All members of the community are invited to join us on this project. We are very excited that we will be having veterans of Habitat for Humanity and The Fuller Center working together on this house. Millard would want that and this is ultimately what the Theology of the Hammer is all about."
The ground breaking ceremony in August was the first that will become part of an annual Millard Fuller Legacy Build week in which Habitat for Humanity affiliates and Fuller Center for Housing covenant partners will build and repair houses in tribute to the life work of Millard Fuller. The week brought in international students, lawyers, judges, local students—all working side by side with homeowners.
